How the Entry Profiles and Early Study Habits Are Related to First-Year Academic Performance in Engineering Programs

This paper explores how the entry profiles of engineering students are related to their academic performance during first year university in a sample 255 first-year (77 females and 178 males) at Northeast Mexico. The predictors used were high school grade point average (HSGPA), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) results, admission test, Spanish adaptation Survey Study Habits Attitudes (SSHA) from Brown Holtzman. SSHA was tested for internal consistency reliabilities via Cronbach’s alpha globally (0.92) following categories: delay avoidance (DA: 0.79), work methods (WM: 0.81), teacher approval (TA: 0.89), educational acceptance (EA: 0.74). results compared with those other studies validate consistency. To assess different between high- low-achieving students, we performed Kruskal–Wallis test found significant differences (p < 0.001) both all variables. We then measured relationships variables success by constructing correlation table, where HSGPA, SAT, DA showed highest correlations: 0.61, 0.40, 0.36, respectively. With these outcomes, predictive model logistic regression (R2=0.52) built forecast specific context.
